We have previously written about how sugary sports drinks are not the healthiest choice of beverage due to the negative health effects – but new studies are emerging that show swishing these sugar drinks in your mouth and then spitting out can deliver a boost of energy, self-control & willpower without the negatives of drinking them.
The Science
You’re pulling a classic bait and switch on your body. The tongue picks up the presence of sugars and tells the body, “Here comes a jolt of energy.” The body is fooled into spending more energy, but without the weight (and negative side effects) of the liquid to drag it down.
In a 2009 British study, stationary bikers washed their mouths with sugar water for ten seconds, then spit it out. The sugar-spitters boosted their performance by about 3 percent over bikers who had spit saccharine water.
Avoid Artificial Sweeteners
So next time swish the sugar drink and spit it out rather than swallowing. You will get an energy and motivation boost without the negative health effects of ingesting the sugar. Follow this up by drinking water to hydrate and also rinsing the sugar off your teeth!
